Ode to a Walnut Tree

You've stood there for decades,
growing and growing,
sheltering wildlife in your canopy,
your bark and your roots.

You've seen houses built,
people moving in,
then moving out,
changing your landscape.

Birds have soared around you,
eaten your hard cased fruit,
rested on your branches,
and bickered on them too.

Today your life ended,
cut into large pieces,
then smaller pieces,
finally chipped to sawdust.

Who's to mourn your passing,
the worms & the spiders?
the bees and the birds?
Your killers wont so I will.
